This is the third St Matthew's Church, Guildford, (the second on this site) opened on 9/6/1873 and consecrated on 15/10/1873. It replaced the second St Matthew's which had been consecrated on 21/9/1860 by Bishop Hale, but was destroyed in a hurricane on 12/3/1872.
The first St Matthew's Anglican Church did not stand at this site, but rather on land donated by Governor James Stirling on his Woodbridge Estate, at the east end of Terrace Road next to where the Guildford Grammar School now stands. It was built in 1836, the foundation stone of which was laid on 6/9/1836 and consecrated on 23/11/1848. It was later demolished.
More historical information/photographs of past and present churches/congregations are invited. Photographs uploaded 25/05/2015.
