A plaque records: Stawell Baptist Church - 1864 - 2014 - Celebrating 150 years - of continuous worship on this site - Unveiled by longstanding church members Jim & Beryl Upson - and Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayer Cr Kevin Erwin. Plaque records: Baptist Church - Numerous Welsh Baptists were among the early mining population and there had been two Baptist chapels at Pleasant Creek from 1859 to 1869 - one Welsh the other English. In 1869 Welsh chapel closed and this Baptist Church was built. At the dedication on 6th February 1870, five services were held - two were in Welsh and the other three in English. - Members of this church were known for their Welsh singing at their services and they had a renowned choir. The cost of the church was met by contributions from the congregation and a member who had benefited from some of Stawell's gold liquidated the remaining debt. |
