The first Mass recorded was celebrated in Parramatta on 22/5/1803.
The building of the first Catholic Church began in 1827. It later became a school. The foundation stone of the first St Patrick's Catholic Church was laid on St Patrick's Day 1836, to meet the needs of a growing congregation. It was consecrated on 28/5/1837. The foundation stone for a new larger church building was laid on 13/8/1854. A tower and spire being added in 1880. A cast bronze bell was installed in the tower in 1904.
In 1986 St Patrick's became the Cathedral Church of the new diocese of Parramatta.
On 19/2/1996 the Cathedral was destroyed by fire, with only the walls remaining. On 29/11/2003 a new St Partricks Catholic Cathedral was dedicated. The old St Patrick's Cathedral is now a Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and adjoinging it is a large contemporary Cathedral.

On 19th February 1996 this beautiful though small cathedral was destroyed by fire - only the stonewalls remained. Our Bishop at the time, Very Rev Bede Heather, said then ‘a new St, Patrick’s will rise from these ashes’ and it has.
