Foundation Stone Notes: | An historic plaque records: In the early 1880s a very strong Roman Catholic community in the Tungamah district began to press for the provision of a church. In 1885 this site in Barr Street was purchased from Mr Bailey. Contributions towards the cost came quickly to hand. Plans and specifications were submitted to Council in October 1885, and building commemced almost immediately. The first Mass was celebrated in the new church on 31 January 1886, and in May of that year, Dr Stephen Reville, Bishop of Sandhurst, performed the dedication and consecration ceremony. The building was extended in 1907, and in 1917 the Stations of the Cross were acquired, further enhancing the attractive interior of the church. A plaque records: Our Lady of Good Counsel - Tungamah - officially opened on the - 30th May 1886 - by - The Right Reverend - Doctor Reville - Co/adjutor Bishop. |
