St Joseph's Catholic Church - Former

An historic plaque records: Tumbulgum - St Joseph's Catholic Church 1940~2008 - 'Little Flower' School and Convent 1942~1971. - Monsignor Fitzpatrick arranged to obtain land at auction for the purpose of establishing a church, convent and school at Tumbulgum. The parcel of land was situated at the corner of Gray Street and Riverside Drive (formerly Pacific Highway).

For many years prior, Mass had been celebrated in the Tumbulgum Hall (known as the Literary Institute). With the acquisition of land, the building was commenced and St Joseph's Church...was opened in 1940. Two years later the 'Little Flower' School and Convent...was opened...St Joseph's Church was transformed each Monday morning to the 'Little Flower' School. Seats were pushed back, desks brought in from the verandah and classes commenced...With the openeing of the St Joseph's School in South Murwillumbah in 1970 the 'Little Flower' School closed...the Convent was closed and the building subsequently sold...St Joseph's Church was sold in 2008 after providing a place of continuous worship for 68 years.
