The St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Springwood. "The history of the Church at Springwood dates back to 1839 when it was part of Penrith Parish under Rev Charles Sumner. Mass was celebrated at Thomas Boland's Springwood Inn and later at their home. The Bolands were at one time the only Catholic family in the area." (Extract church website - https://stachurchspringwood.org.au/about/#history).
In 1891 the church was given a building by the donation of land and funds from the Boland family. This was the first church of St Thomas (Springwood), it was a weatherboard structure, located at what is now Rest Park, in Macquarie Street. It was dedicated in January 1892.
The building was later relocated to Hawkesbury Road, on what is now the site of a retirement village. It was on this site, that the 1919 church building was erected, and still remains today, although largely used by the surrounding retirement village community. See separate entry.
In 1986 the church was relocated again, this time to the former seminary of St Columba.
In February 1996, the present St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church building was opened.
More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 9/11/2019.
