The church was designed by renowned South Australian architect, Walter H Bagot, who also designed the Bonython Hall and Barr-Smith Library at the University of Adelaide and was associated with St Francis Xavier Cathedral and St Peter's Cathedral. The design of St Joan of Arc closely follows the style of an Italian Romanesque Basilica which Bagot believed suited the South Australia's mediterranean climate. Extereior features are a large porch with ornamental brickwork and a simple brick cross, a rose window designed by Kempe and Co on the nave wall and an attached bell tower to the rear. The church has a fine high altar of Italian marble, a barrel vaulted sanctuary and an upstairs gallery.
