Foundation Stone Notes: | The foundation stone for the present church building was laid on 5/12/1869 by Bishop Goold. The text on the foundation stone is not known. Information/photographs are invited. A heritage plaque records: St Augustine's - Church - This bluestone Gothic church designed by T A Kelly and built by Reid & Stewart in 1869/70, replaced a timber church built in 1853. The tower was extended in 1936 and the sacristy added in 1965. The Church Hall, designed by J B Denny in 1880/1, housed St Augustine's School, established in 1853. The Church has long been associated with many national groups especially through its Centre for seamen. |
