The present Sheil Memorial Catholic Church, Picton was built in 1900/1, initiated by a gift of 1500 pounds from Mrs Frances Sheil. It was erected in memory of her late husband, who collapsed and died during the Sunday Mass on 2/5/1896. The church was opened on 1/9/1901 by His Eminence Cardinal Moran, and dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. It is now part of the Parish of St Anthony and the Diocese of Wollongong. The first Catholic Church in Picton was opened in 1847, dedicated to St Patrick, and built on land donated by Major Anhill. It served the community for over 100 years and was demolished in 1947 to make way for a new school. A second larger church building was erected about 1880, nearby, and held services until 1901. It became the church hall in 1902, when the new Sheil Memorial church was opened, and was demolished in 2007. [Sourced from: https://www.stanthonyspicton.org.au/history.html].
