North Melbourne Uniting Church/Congregation of Mark the Evangelist - Former

The North Melbourne Uniting Church/The Congregation of Mark the Evangelist held its final service at this site on 16/7/2023 and the property was sold. The congregation moved to Parkville (see separate entry - 3052). The North Melbourne Uniting Church was part of the Presbytery of Port Phillip East and the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria & Tasmania. The first formal service of the predecessor church was held in the Havilah stables in Errol Street, lent by Mr McMeikan, and was conducted by the Rev Samuel Corrie, Moderator of the Presbytery of Melbourne, of the Church of Scotland. Earlier Presbyterian services were conducted in the blacksmith's shop of Mr Aitkin. Each Saturday the blacksmith shop would be cleared for the service on the following Sunday. The bluestone church which opened on 27/11/1959 but was soon too small for the growing congregation, and was demolished and the materials used to construct the Sunday School Hall (now Elm Street Hall). The present church building was opened on 31/8/1879. Over the years a number of local congregations have amalgamated with the church, with further impetus given to amalgations following the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977¹.
