Historic plaque records: Congregational or Independent Church - The Independent Church met in a carpenter's shop before a wooden church was built in 1853, replaced in 1859-60 by this Gothic bluestone building with classical details. Great skill is shown in the carved stonework, belfry, rose window, elaborate roof trusses and iron palisade fence. The George Fincham organ installed in 1880 is a rare survivor in Victoria. A stone on the hall records: Kyneton - Independent Church - Sunday School - Erected - AD 1898. Historical plaque records: Congregational Church Sunday School - Designed in 1892 in the Arts & Crafts style this is one of the finest buildings constructed in Victoria in the 1890s. After an anonymous donation of 500 [pounds], building was delayed until 1898 following a severe economic depression. Highlights include the fine carvings, timberwork, leadlight and coloured glass windows. |
