A stone tablet on the porch records: Erected - To the Glory of God - by - The Members of this Church in grateful - recognition of the services of the men - who served in The Great War - 1914 ~ 1919. A plaque records: Commemorating - The Centenary of - Maitland - Congregational - Church - 1875 ~ 1975. An information plaque records: Congregational Church - The first church building was an iron structure opened on Easter Sunday 1875 and dubbed the 'Iron King'. - This new building cost 860 [pounds] and was opened on 18th August 1883 by Rev Thomas Hope. It had seating for 142 people. In 1915 the Primaery Room was added. - A Memorial Porch was opened on 14th August 1921 by Brigadier General Leane in memory of the church members who served in World War I. - In 1968 the Congregational and Methodist Churches amalgamated to become the United Church and this building was no longer used by them. - In 1975 the Church property of approximately 3 acres was given to the Congregational Homes for the Ages Inc. on which Maitland's Retirement Village has been built. |
