A plaque attached to the church building records: Lutheran Church - Former Primitive Methodist Church, this attractive stone church with bluestone quoins and dressings and wall calcrete, was built by Joseph Meller in 1869 on part of an aboriginal corroboree ground. After church union it was used as a Sunday school, then sold in 1889 to the Orange Lodge, a Protestant group of Irish origin. Purchased in 1926 by the Lutherans, a porch and vestry have been added. Lutherans previously worshipped at a church at Pine Creek (built c1864) and in Schmeris' homestead dining room at Leasingham. Sometimes they travelled by foot to Peters Hill, east of Riverton. Ths history of ownership of this church reflects the very high proportion of Mrethodists as well as Lutherans in South Australia, which contrasts with the other Australian States.

The St John's Lutheran Church, Auburn is part of the Lutheran District South Australia-Northern Territory and the Lutheran Church of Australia. The church building was originally built for the Primitive Methodist Church, and was opened on 10/10/1859. The church subsequently closed and the building was sold about 1888 to an Orange Lodge for use as a hall. After many years it was purchased by the Lutheran church, and consecrated on 5/9/1926 as the St John's Lutheran Church. A vestry and porch were later added to the building by St John's. Prior to the opening of their new place of worship, members of the church had met in a building on a local farm in Leasingham and at the Pine Creek Lutheran Chapel. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 16/2/2024 & 5/4/2025.
