A plaque on the front of the hotel records: Built in 1874 for John Aver Mitchell (c1833 - 1879) a Cornishman who arrived in SA 1847 and founded Terowie in 1878. This hotel was the town's first building. The first part, a chapel is at the rear. Regular services were held there. The Hotel was the hub of the town, and the venue for many public meetings, some of which involved the planning of number of the buildings which stand today. Sporting and recreational meetings were also held there.

A plaque commemorating General Douglas McArthur's visit on 20 March 1942, [at] Terowie Railway Station, when he changed trains on his way to Adelaide. and made a speech regarding the Battle of the Philippines. Written on the plaque: 'I came out of Bataan and I shall return'. This historic message echoed around the world was given on this spot by US General Douglas McArthur at his first press interview in Australia 20.3.1942.
