An information panel records: Penong Methodist Church - Methodism in Penong goes back to 1893 when Mr A J Williams was appointed as the first Home Missionary in the Far West. - Services were originally conducted in the Penong Station woolshed, Later, some were also held in the Town hall. A Methodist manse was built in 1901, it was the first Methodist building.Mr F Davis lived there with his family in his role of Home Missionary. That building was demolished and is now occupied by a police station residence. - The first ordained minister was Reverend W O Harris who was appointed in 1912. His means of transport was a camel drawn buggy. It was during this time that the church was built. - Fundraising for the project was a major concern and the Ladies Committee were kept busy organising events. Most of the building was done by voluntary labour and it is said that Reverend Harris worked very hard alongside his congregation.- All of the timber and iron for the church had to be shipped to Port LeHunte by coastal steamer and then taken by horse and dray to Penong.- The shipping service was very unreliable and at times there was a considerable wait for material, in fact, the timber for the pews arrived so late, that the last screw was put into place at 3am on the morning of the official opening. - Reverend C Doley officiated at the official opening ceremony in November 1912. |
