A wattle and daub church built by Rev Richard Johnson (Chaplain of the First Fleet) in 1793 was burned down in 1798. A new stone church, named St Philip's, was opened in 1810. This was replaced by the current building in 1856. Rev Johnson also conducted the first Christian service in Australia on 3 February, 1788. A plaque in Lang Park, across York Street from the present church records: "The church of Saint Philip named after Governor Philip stood on this site - 1798 1856.- R.A.H.S. 1942".
