Foundation Stone Notes: | (The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle -2 September 1865) "COOMA. (From our correspondent.) LAYING THE FOUNDATION-STONE OF ST. PAUL'S Church. On Tuesday, the 29th August, a large number of persons of all persuasions assembled in Cooma for the purpose of being present at the laying of the foundation stone of the church of St. Paul the Apostle." Four plaques record the erection of the steeple as follows: (1) This stone was laid by - Hugh Stewart - April 21st AD 1891 (2) This stone was laid by - Joseph G Beazley - April 21st AD 1891 (3) This stone was laid by - James Litchfield - April 21st AD 1891 (4) This stone was laid by - David Ryrie - April 21st AD 1891." A commemorative stone records: This stone was laid by - The Right Reverend - K J Clements - Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn - 29th August 1965 - F A Hart ~ Rector. A plaque above a very worn foundation stone records: The stone below was laid by - F Blaxland Esq - to commemorate the erection of - this Lych Gate - on this site 18th April 1923. A plaque on an archway of climbing plants records: In memory of Neil Mackay Reid - Died 15th May 1925 - Erected by his Schoolmates. A plaque records: This pipe organ is dedicated - to the glory of God - and in loving memory of - Kenneth Leslie McKeown - Canon of S Saviour's Cathedral - and Rector of Cooma 1947-48. - The gift of Mrs Chandler and Helpers. A stained glass window records: I to the hills will lift mine eyes - from whence cometh my help - To mark the association of the men & women - of the Snowy Scheme with St Paul's. In the frame of the Lych Gate are two plaques recording the memory/names of men lost in the Great War. These l am unable to read. Details are invited. |
