The Church was built by convict labour under military supervision with the first service conducted in 1828. The Colonial Chapel of Christ the Healer was completed earlier and still in use in association with the church. The initial worshippers consisted of the Chaplain, Camp Commandant and a detachment of British Infantry and the well guarded prisoners.
