A heritage plaque at the site records: Catholic Church and Convent - St Michael's Roman Catholic Church was consecrated by Bishop Torregiani in November 1889, on the ridge immediately behind this sign. In 1891, a small convent and school was constructed for the Sisters of St Joseph. Sister Mary MacKillop, as Mother Superior, visited Hillgrove on her occasional inspection tours in the late 1890s. She has since become Australia's first Saint. Blessed Mary MacKillop. - Due to Hillgrove's falling population, the convent closed in 1921. The church hall, carefully dismantled, was re-erected at Dangarsleigh south of Armidale, where it still stands today. |
