A heritage plaque at the site records: Catholic Church and Convent - St Michael's Roman Catholic Church was consecrated by Bishop Torregiani in November 1889, on the ridge immediately behind this sign. In 1891, a small convent and school was constructed for the Sisters of St Joseph. Sister Mary MacKillop, as Mother Superior, visited Hillgrove on her occasional inspection tours in the late 1890s. She has since become Australia's first Saint. Blessed Mary MacKillop. - Due to Hillgrove's falling population, the convent closed in 1921. The church hall, carefully dismantled, was re-erected at Dangarsleigh south of Armidale, where it still stands today.

Comments

The former St Michael's Catholic Church, Hillgrove closed many years ago and the church building was relocated to Dangarsleigh. The church building had been consecrated in 1889 by Bishop Torregiani of the Diocese of Armidale. After the church was closed, the building was relocated to Dangarsliegh (see separate entry - Dangarsleigh - 2350). No other details are known. More historical information/photographs of the former  church/congregation are invited. Photograph uploaded 23/2/2023.
