The present St George Antioch Orthodox Cathedral is the mother Church of the Antioch Orthodox Church in Australia and New Zealand, and has been since it was built in 1953. The first service in the incomplete building was held for Easter 1954. It was completed in 1956 and consecrated on 7/11/1964. It replaced the original St George Antioch Orthodox Church which had been consecrated in November 1920, and located at the cnr of Walker and Redfern Streets. It had been used for worship until 14/5/1950, after which it was demolished for housing. More historical information/photographs of the church(es)/congregation(s) are invited.
