The following history was provided by Joseph Galea on 21/3/2025: "St Finbar's Catholic Church and School was established in 1926 as part of the Parish of St Patrick's Kogarah. The school operated in the church building during the week and on Sundays the movable concertina timber and glass doors were pulled back to make room Mass to be held. In 1939 The Covent of Mercy was built and opened across the road and the Mercy Nuns from Willcania - Forbes resided there and by 1940 ran St Finbar's school across the road. In 1936, a new school building was built facing Broughton Street incorporating 3 class rooms. In 1940, St Finbar's became a separate parish from Kogarah and the new War Memorial church was built and opened in 1959. The old church/ school building was altered with a second story extension in 1966 to provide a full time Hall and 4 extra class rooms. In 1971 a new single story kindergarten and staff room was built behind the old church hall. In 1984 the 1936 school building was altered with a second story and provided a new library as well as extra class rooms. Also in 1984 we saw the first lay principal Mrs Evelyn Graves take over from St Veronica and the Mercy Sisters ending near 50 years of teaching at the school."
