Foundation Stone Notes: | An historic plaque records: Tumbulgum - St Mark's Presbyterian Church 1886 ~ Late 1970's - The initial effort to establish a Presbyterian Church on the Tweed was made in the early 1880s. In those days the main centre of the Tweed was Tumbulgum. The first minister was Rev John Alexander Rainy Brotchie MA. He arrived in 1884 and came from Scotland where he had been ordained the previous year. He settled in Tumbulgum and made it his headquarters for 17 years. He preached in the Junction Hall until the church at Tumblugum was built in 1886 at 14 Bawden St and named St Mark's. Rev Brotchie accepted a transfer to Carcoar NSW in 1901. In 1908 the Tumbulgum congregation held a meeting in which severance from Murwillumbah and attachment to Tweed Heads was discussed, but the proposal was not accommodated. The Tumbulgum Public School used the church as an extra classroom on a number of occasions, also the Methodist Church held monthly meetings on this site. Sunday School was well attended by the children from Tumbulgum. St Mark's was sold in the late 1970s and renovated as a private residence. [Tweed Shire Council] |
