The Christ Church Anglican Cathedral, Darwin is in the Diocese of the Northern Territory, and is the seat of the Bishop of the Northern Territory. The original Christ Church Anglican Church was built in 1902, and was designated a cathedral in 1968, on the appointmment of the first Bishop of the Northern Territory. During the early part of the Second World War the church building was used as a garrison Church by Defence Services. However, the building was damaged by a bomb on 19/2/1942 and then by subsequent looting, following which it was repaired by the Navy and used as a sick bay. In 1944 the Porch and Entrance Gateway were added by members of the services in memory of comrades killed in action in the Northern Territory. On the morning of 25th December, 1974 cyclone Tracy completely destroyed the Parish Hall, the clergy residences and the Cathedral leaving only a small part of the west wall, the porch and entrance gateway. A new cathedral was built and opened on 13/3/1977. More historical information/photographs of the cathedral/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 28/5/2024.
