A street Information plaque records: First constructed in Pine Creek in 1904, the church of Christ The King was dismantled in 1936 and transported 760klm towards Tennant Creek. Along the way trucks became bogged and loads were dumped on the road verge. Then the church became known as the 'Longest church in Australia'. The church was erected on a miner's right and opened by Bishop Raible of the Kimberly in October 1936. Father Dew became the resident priest. A wind driven generator was used to light up the cross in 1953 during the tenure of Father Dallas Cox. The longest serving priest was Father Taylor (1957 - 1970). |
