Foundation Stone Notes: | A plaque records: The township of Banana was surveyed in 1860. Approval for the site becoming a town was given on 5 June 1861 with allotments being put up for sale in Rockhampton later that year. - In its heyday, Banana was the administration centre of the Banana Shire for 50 years and could boast a police station, bank, courthouse, post office, school, several hotels, stores, blacksmith and a racecourse ... but never a church. Spiritual needs were met by visiting ministers. - Just over 100 years later, in the drought of 1969, local folk felt the need for a place where they could gather to worship. So this humble building came into being under the umbrella of the Methodist Church. With church union in 1977, it became part of the Uniting Church. - Construction was undertaken by a Biloela carpenter with the assistance of willing volunteers. The cost of the building was $4417 of which the Ladies Guild contributed $1200 for the laying of the foundation and floor. It was officially opened in August 1969. - A kitchen area was added in 1987 followed by a Sunday School room in 2002. - The church stands approximately on the site where a Mr Ohley once had a small store selling mainly soft drinks and sometimes ice cream brought down from Westwood for special occasions. This fact can easily be verified from the large amount of broken glass collected over the years from this area. We can perhaps take the liberty of speculating that Bill Ohley may have planted the bottle tree which stands nobly at the rear of the church. - This building has witnessed not only market days, workshops and Christmas trees over its life time but also many baptisms, 3 weddings and one funeral - that of Mr Alf Cooke who had so kindly donated the land on which the building stands. - Deuteronomy 28:6 - You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. |
