An information board at the site records: St Paul's Church of England - The first St Paul's Church of England was erected here as the township's first house of worship on 18 March 1876. With mining increasing and the population rising, the church outgrew its use and was replaced by the current building. This 400 seat church was designed by local architect W G Smith, measuring 70ft by 33ft in addition to the chancel and vestries. It was erected by local builder Ben Toll and opened by the Bishop of North Queensland on 30 December 1883...a bell tower...was removed to the new church in Gill Street...Issues around the buildings maintenance and access saw the Church of England moving to Gill Street in 1965. The building is regarded as the oldest timber building still in use in Charters Towers. |
