The foundation stone from the original church building, destroyed by Cyclone Yasi in 2011, is now incorporated into the current building, it records: A M D G - This foundation stone was set by - His Excellency - Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith KCMG., KCVO., DSO., - Governor of Queensland - on 26th January 1964 in the year of - Cardwells Centenary - Priest K A Jackson Th L. A plaque above the 1966 foundation from the original church building records: This stone was salvaged from - the original church on - this site which was destroyed - by Cyclone Yasi - It was re-laid - in the foundations - of the new church in - April 2012. The large carved stone cross in the church grounds is in memory of Walter Scott, one of the pioneers of the Valley of Lagoons Station and of Cardwell, and patron of the local Church of England. It was moved to its present position in 1965. [see photograph one]. |
