The Rev Benjamin Glennie was appointed at Drayton in 1850, and the original church, of slab construction, was opened in January 1859. It was located at the corner of Cambooya & Rudd Streets.
The present St Matthew's Anglican Church site was acquired to meet the needs of a growing congregation, with the first service held on 22/11/1887.
