Foundation Stone Notes: | A plaque records: Church of England - St Anne's Jondaryan - This church was built in 1959 on - Jondaryan Station at that time in - the Diocese of Newcastle. The first service was held in October 1859. - In the big flood of 1893 the people - of the Station took refuge in the - church which later that year was - moved to its present site. A circular plaque records: This church was erected in 1859 at the Jondaryan Homestead by the then owners, Robert Edward and Frederick Tooth, the Station having been taken up in 1842 by Charles Coxen. The Reverend Benjamin Glennie records in his diary on 23 October 1859, "First service in the church built by Robert Tooth". This was the second church built on the Darling Downs and was open to all denominations. In 1893, after the flood, it was removed and re-erected, with minor alterations, on the present site donated by Thomas Taylor. On Sunday, 18th December, although unfinished, it was used for confirmation by the Lord Bishop of Rockhampton, The Rght Reverend Nathaniel Dawes. St Anne's is the oldest church still in use on the Darling Downs. This plaque was the gift of the Queensland Women's Historical Association, and was unveiled by Gwen Kent of Jondaryan Homestead on Sunday, 4th September 1966. A plaque on a bolder beside the church records: This plaque was unveiled on 25th October 2009 - by The Right Reverend Robert Nolan - Bishop of The Western Region - to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of - St Anne's Church.- When constructed in 1859, the church was - part of the Diocese of Newcastle - and later became part of the Corporation - of the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane, Parish of Oakey. - The parish acknowledges the support of the Queensland Government through the - Q150 Program. |
