A plaque records: Heritage Place - All Saints - Anglican Church - Thomas Lorimer Smith of Woodlands donated two acres of land and timber for a church building at what is now the intersection of Seminary Road and the Warrego Highway. On the 1 May 1891 tenders for the construction of the church were received and Mr Luder was the successful tenderer. The church which was dedicated as 'All Saints' was opened on 5 July 1891 and was consecrated by the Bishop of Brisbane, 'The Right Reverend' William Webber. The following year 'The Rt Rev'd Webber' returned to Marburg to consecrate the burial ground, the land for which was also donated by T L Smith. - As early as 1946, suggestions were being made to move 'The Church on the Hill' down into the town. By 1948 these suggestions became real proposals and much discussion took place . However, it was not until 1956 that the parishioners in Marburg were able to buy a block of land in the town where a hall was built and opened on February 1959. - In 1977, some of the church land on the hill was resumed to build a four-laned highway. The last service was held in the Church on 22 May 1977 and "All Saints' was moved & relocated on the block in town next to the hall. Rev John Magee conducted the re-openeing service on 22 October 1978. The bural ground remains in its old position on the hill. - An initiative of Ipswich City Council (0067). |
