An historic plaque at the front of the church records: St Matthew's Catholic Church - This church was designed by Messers - Wallace & Gibson & tenders were invited - for its erection in 1885 following many - years of fund-raising efforts. However - it was not built until 1897 by Daniel - Connolly & was officially opened & - solemnly blessed in 1901. Before then, - Mass had been held in private homes & - at the Court House. The Leyburn Catholic - community first belonged to the Warwick - Parish after it had been established in - the 1860's, & in 1877 became part - of the Clifton Parish. It is recored on the church notice board that the church was blessed in 1900 (not 1901as stated on the historic plaque?). |
