St Matthew's Anglican Church celebrated its 150th anniversary on 17/9/2017. It was celebrated with a service involving the Archbishop of Brisbane, Phillip Aspinall.
St Matthew's began in 1864 when John and Mary Nicholson...and John's brother, William migrated to Australia...
That same year, John and Mary purchased land in Church Road where Grovely Lodge was erected with regular worship held in the large room...
When it was decided by the settlers that they should have a church of their own, the Nicholson brothers permitted the construction of the church on their property, on the condition that the grounds remained in their possession...
John and Mary Nicholson are buried in the grounds of St Matthew's along with many of those present at the laying of the Foundation Stone. (See https://anglicanchurchsq.org.au/wp-content/themes/acsq-theme/focus/1505713418/focus.pdf for fuller story)
A small graveyard is attached to the church. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 26/2/2018.
