A number of plaques outline the earlier churches that combined to create the Merthyr Uniting Church. These included: Brunswick Street Methodist Church, which began as the Primitive Methodist Church in 1857. Its final service was held on 10/1/1982. Kingsholme Methodist Church, which began as an undenominational mission in 1888. It formally became part of the Methodist Church in 1902. Its final service was held in 1978 and the church building sold to the Macedonian Orthodox Church in 1981. Fortitude Valley Methodist Church, Brookes Street began with the preaching of a retired minister, the Rev Nathaniel Turner who was conscerned at the low morals of the new settlers. The first church building was erected in 1856. Final service held in 1977. Fortitude Valley Presbyterian Church, Warner Street began when a congregation met in a cottage in Ann Street in 1866. Its final church building was erected in 1885, and its final service held in 1977. Each of these churches had many experiences and other developments along the way. |
