The St James' Anglican Cathedral Church, Townsville is the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Queensland (Townsville Anglican Ministry Unit) and the seat of the Bishop. Prior to the erection of the first St James' church building, which was opened on 1/10/1871, the congregation met in the Court House. In 1878 the Diocese of North Queensland was created, after which the church became a Pro-Cathedral. The first sod for a new cathedral church was turned on 22/6/1887. The first stage of the new Cathedral was consecrated on 27/10/1892. A cyclone on 9/3/1903 destroyed the 1871 church building and the temporary roof on the Cathedral. This was promptly replaced with some modifications made to the building. On the 12/6/1960 the final foundation stone was set by the Primate of Australia, marking the completion of the Cathedral, which was consecrated on 24/6/1978. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 18/10/2024.
