Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral Church

The Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral Church, Townsville City is Part of the Cathedral Parish  and the Diocese of Townsville, as well as being the seat of the Bishop. The building of the church foundation and basement began in 1896, with the foundation stone laid on 7/10/1900. However, work on the nave or aisles did not commence until 1902, but were completed in ten months and the building was opened on 16/11/1902 by Bishop Higgins. On 3/3/1903 the building lost its roof in cyclone Leonta. The building was repaired but other building enhancements were abandoned. With the creation of the Diocese of Townsville in 1931, the church acquired Cathedral status, as the church of the Bishop of Townsville.
