The Church@The Gabba, Woolloongabba was previously the South Bank Baptist Church (see 4101). The church for about 140 years occupied land in Vulture Street, overlooking the Brisbane River. In 2013 it relocated to its current building. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 2/5/2017.
Stephen Appleton provided the following on 2/9/2020.
"The South Bank Baptist Church - Former. The Church congregation was founded on 17th November 1872 at a meeting in the Mechanics Institute in Stanley Street. The land for the church building was purchased in June 1873 and the construction of the wooden churchg building completed in May 1874. The church had several name changes while at this site. It was originally named 'South Brisbane Baptist Church'. The name changed to 'Vulture Street Baptist Church' some time in the early 1900s and this was the name painted on the old wooden building prior to reconstruction: it reverted back to 'South Brisbane' with the remodelling and for the church's centenary in 1972. It became 'South Bank Baptist Church' in 2008. The building was substantially remodelled from 1962, reaching the final appearance as seen in the photograph by 1970. A fire on 7th July 1982 damaged the interior but the repaired building looked much the same on the exterior as it had before. The church building was sold in January 2013 and demolished in February that year, for the construction of high-rise apartments. The congregation now meets as 'Church @ The Gabba' in Stanley Street, Woolloongabba "
