The first Congregational Church in Toowoomba was built in 1860. It was erected on land donated to the Rev J T Waraker for a church and school by Messrs Taylor and Russell. It was located at 120 Russell Streeet, Towoomba the site of the current Clifford House. By 1863 the church had outgrown the Russell Street builing and a new church building was erected in Margaret Street in 1864.
The former Toowoomba Congregational Church building, erected in 1864, was demolished in 1889, and re-erected at 133 Margaret Street, Toowoomba. Here it was again used by the Congregational Church for worship. It was replaced by a grand new stone church building opened on 16/4/1904. At that time the old timber church building continued to be used as a Sunday School. The wooden church had originally been opened in 1864 for public worship by the Rev J W C Drane, minister, Ipswich Congregational Church. Architect Chambers; Builder Larkin. The new Congregational Church building closed in 1919. (See separate entry Toowoomba Church of Christ). More historical information/photographs of the former church/congregation are invited.
