Foundation Stone Notes: | Foundation stone records: Jeffries Memorial Church - This stone was laid by - Mr R T Sweetman - Nov 1st 1919. An historical plaque records: Jefferis Memorial Church - Named after the Reverend Dr James Jefferis, a leading Congregational minister, this church was opened in 1919 to meet the needs of the people of Yilki. Services had previously been held in his home, the former Fountain Inn, which he had purchased in 1894. Land for the church was donated by the Jefferis family, Mary Rumbelow donated the limestone for the building and Cain Rumbelow procured the granite rock from West Island for the foundation stone. This stone was laid by Robert Sweetman, Sunday School Superintendent and Chairman of the District Council of Encounter Bay. The Gothic church has a high gabled roof with a small porch, also with a gabled roof. It was built by Johannes Fred Bartel who had constructed the Newlandtown Congregational Church in 1918. The first wedding, held in 1920, was that of Charles Walker and Ida Bolger, whose family ran the Yantoowarra Guest House on the seafront. |
