Foundation Stone Notes: | A heritage notice board records: Baptist Church - 18 Murray Street -The Baptist religious community is first recorded as having services in Gawler in early 1866 at the then Oddfellows Hall at 63 Murray Street. The first ministers included the Reverend Silas Mead and the Reverend Parkin. History records that the first church baptism was conducted in the South Para river. - The original building on site was constructed in 1870 as both a church and school premises. Prior to the establishment of State funded schools under the Education Act 1875, most schooling in South Australia was conducted in small schools operated either by churches or private individuals. - Additions were constructed in 1873, class rooms added in 1879 and 1900, and a lecture hall in 1923 as a memorial to William Poiden, a Gawler carpenter and church supporter. The limestone and brick materials and the style and ornamentation of the original building have been continued in later additions to retain a cohesive appearance in the complex of buildings. |
