Foundation Stone Notes: | An historical plaque records: The Anglican (formerly Congregational) Church - Originally constructed in 1873, the Congregational Church was built at the encouragement of the missionary David Milne, Kingston's first resident minister. - Reverend Milne was ordained in Kingston as a Congregational minister in 1869, with Congregationalists being the largest religious group at the time. Services continued to be held in Vine Cottage, Reverend Milne's home, until the church was built. - In the early 1880's, the Congregationalists ceased to use the building, and it was rented for Church of England services which were conducted by the Reverend W J Bussell. As Mission Chaplain in the South East, Reverend Bussell had begun holding regular services in the Kingston Schoolroom in 1878. Five years later, he became the first rector when the chapel was dedicated as Holy Trinity Church. - The church suffered damage in the 1897 earthquake: its belfry was removed and the tie rods installed but it remains structurally sound and still in use. |
