A heritage plaque records: Building work commenced on the Gladstone Bible Christian Chapej under the direction of Rev John Dingle in 1875. The chapel was opened on Sunday 28th May 1876. - The cost was 550 [pounds] with 194 [pounds] being raised at the time of the opening, including opening day collection of 38 [pounds]. It was reported the chapel would be forty feet long by twenty-five feet wide and would accommodate 150 people. - On January 1st 1900, there was a union between the Bible Christian, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist Churches in South Australia. When achieved nationally in 1902 it became known as the Methodist Church of Australia. - The Bible Christian Chapel building became the home of the Methodist Sunday School until early 1919 when an earthquake shook the town, causing the ceiling to collapse and damage to the organ and seating. - On May 10th 1919 the building was purchased by the Gladstone Masonic Lodge for 200 [pounds]. - The lodge continued to use the building until the local branch (chapter 7) was closed in 1988. - The building is now privately owned... |
