The former Gawler River Uniting Church has closed having served in the community for over 160 years, and the property is listed for sale (2023). The Gawler River church, was erected on land donated by Mr John Woods. Early services were held in private homes but due to their small size were unsuitable. A small church building was erected in 1854, but had to be extended within three years. Over the years further additions and alterations have been made to meet the needs of the congregation.
“Stone-hill Wesleyan Chapel, Gawler River. Our Wesleyan friends in this neighbourhood have long felt the need of a place of worship. The increase of the population has demanded it, their own dwellings being far too incommodious for the purpose of holding public religious services without great inconvenience to the families. . . The site selected for the building is a very eligible one, affording a very commanding view, and occupying a somewhat central position with regard to the families. resident in the neighbourhood.” [Adelaide Observer 1854]
A small cemetery is located adjacent to the church. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 22/1/2023.
