Foundation stone for the porch extension records: To the Glory of God - This stone was laid by - Thomas Thornton Reed - M.A., D. Litt., Th. D.- Bishop of Adelaide - 17th August 1957. A plaque records: St Augustine of Hippo - Memorial Garden - In remembrance of Parishioners An historical plaque in the park records: St Augustine's Church - The paddle steamer 'Etona' built in 1889 replaced a steam launch of the same name which had ministered to riverfolk from Goolwa to the Renmark area since 1891. Sponsored by the Anglican Doiocese of Adelaide it was fitted with a small chapel in which were performed marriages, christianings, and confirmations. The river ministry lasted until 1912. - St Augustine's Church was constructed in 1906 on land gifted by Mr H N Rossell and building stone carried by river barge from nearby Spring Cart Gully. - ...The building was dedicated in honour of St Augustine of Hippo by the Bishop of Adelaide (Nutter Thomas) on 4th November 1906. Porch extensions were carried out in 1957, the Rectory was commenced in 1914 and extensions made in 1926. The Parish Hall served as the St Augustine's Day School from 1920 until 1949 and then a pre-school until 1961. |
