Foundation Stone Notes: | An historical plaque records: St Augustine's Anglican Church - The original secton of this church, built in 1869, was a modest building roofed with slate and constructed of fine shell grit limestone quarried at Encounter Bay. It was designed by Thomas Jones and built at a cost of 150 [pounds] by James Bowley, who was assisted by George Weymouth. When the transepts were added in 1884, the original building became the sanctuary. Anfrew Oliver, the builder of the transepts and also manager of the West Island granite quarry, used granite as a decorative stone in the interior. In 1922 both the nave and the topower were built in the Inter-War Gothic style, with a porch added in 1962 to complete the church. The church hall to the south was built in1907, and the walkway added in 1970. |
