A foundation stone for the major redevelopment of the church building records: To the Glory of God - This stone was laid by - Sir Arthur E Havelock GCS - GCMG CCIE Gov of Tasmania - Feb 4 1902 - The Foundation Stone of Original - Church having been laid by - Sir George Arthur. Leut Governor - 28 January 1825. A plaque records: Launceston City Council - St John's Anglican Church - Church building commissioned by Lt Governor Arthur 1824. Built in stuccoed brick, Georgian Gothic style. Clay dug from Prince's Square. Clock Tower completed 1830 with one clock face. Present clock installed 1935. Small sanctuary added 1866. Alexander North, Architect designed additions commenced 1901, including Byzantine Dome. Old nave walls encased in new brickwork 1938. Carved cement in archways depict Tasmanian flora. |
