The original foundation stone was laid by Lt Governor Arthur on 28/1/1825. More information recorded on memorial stones/plaques to mark the history of the St Johns development is invited.

A foundation stone for the major redevelopment of the church building records: To the Glory of God - This stone was laid by - Sir Arthur E Havelock GCS - GCMG CCIE Gov of Tasmania - Feb 4 1902 - The Foundation Stone of Original - Church having been laid by - Sir George Arthur. Leut Governor - 28 January 1825.

A plaque records: Launceston City Council - St John's Anglican Church - Church building commissioned by Lt Governor Arthur 1824. Built in stuccoed brick, Georgian Gothic style. Clay dug from Prince's Square. Clock Tower completed 1830 with one clock face. Present clock installed 1935. Small sanctuary added 1866. Alexander North, Architect designed additions commenced 1901, including Byzantine Dome. Old nave walls encased in new brickwork 1938. Carved cement in archways depict Tasmanian flora.

Comments

The St John's Anglican Church, Launceston is part of the Diocese of Tasmania. The church is dedicated to St John the Evangelist. Although the original church building was only partially complete, it was opened for divine service on 16/12/1825 and consecrated on 6/3/1828, by Archdeacon Scott, from NSW. Since then many additions and alterations have been made to the church building to meet the needs of the congregation. A major redevelopment having been commenced in 1902 with further developments in 1911.
