The St Peter's Anglican Church, Hamilton is part of the Parish of Hamilton and the Diocese of Tasmania. While planning for a church began in 1831, the erection of the structure did not begin until 1834, with the partially completed building needing to be pulled down, and restarted at one stage, as the walls were unsafe. The building was completed and opened on 9/2/1837 by Chaplain the Rev M J Meyes. It was consecrated on 8/5/1838 by Bishop Broughton, the first and only Bishop of Australia, on a visit to Tasmania. The church building has only one door - reason was to stop the convicts from escaping? A cemetery adjoins the church with headstones dating from the 1830s. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 26/1/2020.
