Foundation Stone Notes: | The Mercury Monday 5 Feb 1917. "NEW GOSPEL HALL LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE The trustees of the Mariner's Church, Hobart some time ago disposed of their propery on the wharf, and the old building, in which services have been conducted for many years by the Open Brethren, is to be vacated. An allotment of ground in Murray Street, just below Melville Street, has been purchased, and a start made with the erection on it of a building to take the place of the Mariner's Church. On Saturday evening the foundation stone was laid by Mr Charles Crosby, of Melbourne, and a service of prayer and thanksgiving was held on the ground...Mr Crosby, after declaring the stone well and faithfully laid, expressed his pleasure at being present to perform the ceremony. It was, he said, a great many years since he was first associated with work in Hobart at the old Ragged School, in what was then called Watchorn Street. For 20 years he had been privileged to tell the boys and girls there of the way of salvation..." (The Mercury (Hobart, Tas.: 1860 - 1954), p. 2.
