A plaque records: St Mary's Bell - Truly a Survivor - The first Catholic Church at Snug was built in 1858 on land donated by the Torpy Family. It stood until New Years Eve 1897 when it succumbed to the Black Friday Bushfires that swept across Tasmania. - Within three weeks a new church was erected, a remarkable achievement, and a Bell was later donated to the new church by the Rabbitt Faily. - The second church stood a little longer than the first, but it too was burnt to the ground in 1967 when the fires of Black Tuesday devastated much of Tasmania. The Bell alone survived. - The bell was later mounted on a steel pylon in a temporary village on the Snug Oval, where it was rung each Sunday to summon the faithful of all denominations. As the Snug community rebuilt after the fires, the Bell became a symbol of resilence and survival. - The third Catholic Church was built and opened shortly before Christmas, 1967...the Bell ... back to the Church of St Mary's...where its new Tower was completed in February 2016....
