The sandstone was shipped from Bruny Island. - The land and the wooden chapel, St Mary's, were provided by Jane, Lady Franklin and served the community from 1839. - The Colonial Cemetery contains graves dating from this time and includes several elaborate headstones. - The weather-board school hall was used for Sunday School, concerts, shows and social activities from 1870. An historical board records: The first church in Franklin was erected by Lady Franklin for the people of "The Settlement" (as the town was originally named). St Mary's Church of England was a modest wooden chapel. It is not known exactly where the weatherboard building stood, but it is thought to have been adjacent to the 'new' church.... |
