St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church - Former

The foundation stone was laid by Right Rev Dr Goold, Bishop of Melbourne on 9/3/1873. The text on the foundation stone is not known. Information/photographs are invited.

A scroll placed beneath the foundation stone in Latin recorded: "In the year of Our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three, on the second Sunday in Lent, in the 27th year of the Pontificate of Pius 9th, the Sovereign Pontiff who, amid a sea of tribulation, rules the Church of Christ wisely and well: Victoria being Queen of Great Bristian. The Right Rev James Alipius Goold O S A., Bishop of the Diocese of Melbourne, laid the foundation stone of this church, dedicated to the glory of God, under the title and patronage of St Thomas of Aquin, assisted by the Rev Michael Joseph Shannahan, the pastor of the mission, the Rev James Francis Corbett, pastor of St Kilda, the preacher on the occasion, in presence of great concourse of the faithful, to all of whom grace and benediction. The architect being Mr H R Caselli; Messers Lewellyn and Edwards, builders; Mr J Davey, clerk of works."
